Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is contractor coaching?

Contractor coaching is personalized guidance to help you plan, hire, and manage home remodeling or DIY projects. I provide advice on selecting contractors, understanding bids, spotting red flags, and troubleshooting issues — all to help you feel confident and in control.

Do you do construction work yourself?

While I’m a skilled carpenter with over 20 years of experience, my coaching service focuses on helping you navigate your project. I’m here to support your decisions, answer questions, and provide expertise — but I don’t act as the contractor or carpenter on your project.

Can you help me with a DIY project?

Absolutely. I can answer any questions you have. Whether you’re building a deck, shelving, or a small renovation, I can advise on tools, materials, safety, and best practices to make sure your project goes smoothly.

How do I know if I need coaching or if I should just hire a contractor?

If you’re unsure about bids, contracts, or how to manage a project — or if you want to be more involved without feeling overwhelmed — coaching can help. If you prefer to hand everything off and trust a contractor completely, coaching might be less necessary, but I’m happy to help you vet those professionals too.

How do your coaching sessions work?

Sessions happen over Zoom or phone, usually lasting 30–60 minutes depending on your needs. Afterward, you’ll receive a summary email with notes, recommendations, and any resources discussed.

What kinds of projects do you specialize in?

I’m experienced with residential remodels, additions, carpentry, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and farm-related building projects. If your project is unique, we can discuss it to see how I can best support you.

What if I have a question between sessions?

I encourage clients to reach out anytime with follow-up questions. I’m here to support your project from start to finish.

How do you handle situations when a contractor seems untrustworthy?

Part of coaching is helping you identify red flags early. If you’re working with a contractor I don’t recommend, I’ll guide you on how to address concerns or, if necessary, find someone more reliable.

Why mention your Women and Gender Studies background?

My studies shape how I approach this work — with respect, clear communication, and an emphasis on empowering clients. I believe everyone deserves to feel confident and respected during their home projects, which can often feel intimidating or exclusionary.
